Microsoft's marketing blitz for the operating system was enormous: The Empire State Building lit up in the company's colors, the $300 million spent on everything from newspaper advertisements to the massive launch event, the Rolling Stones' "Start Me Up" repurposed as a theme song.

Windows 95 established a number of visual and programming themes that would carry through subsequent versions of the operating system: the Start menu, the taskbar and the increasingly baked-in multimedia features. Although the initial release shipped browser-free, Internet Explorer was eventually integrated with the company's Windows 95 Plus! Pack—and the door opened for company's issues with the antitrust brigade.

A lot has changed for Microsoft in the intervening 15 years, and this week offered some key examples of that fact. The world is more mobile and cloud-based, and the emphasis in 2010 is increasingly on smartphones as opposed to desktop-based operating systems.

The final version of Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 developer tools will arrive Sept. 16—yet another sign the company is ramping ever faster toward the release of its next-generation smartphone platform.

"All developers will have equal opportunity to capitalize on the first-mover advantage of having their apps or games ready at launch," Brandon Watson, Microsoft's director of developer experience for Windows Phone 7, wrote in a posting on The Windows Blog. Microsoft has been encouraging both games and application designers to build for the new platform, in hopes of having a sizable app ecosystem.

That update, combined with news that Microsoft will launch its Windows Phone Marketplace in early October, also helps diagram the theme of the company's next three quarters: Just as Autumn 2009 centered on the make-or-break of the Windows 7 launch, this year represents the company's gamble on smartphones.

It's a gamble that needs to pay off, of course. Although Windows Mobile 6.5 was intended as a market-share placeholder until Microsoft could bring Windows Phone 7 online, the company's portion of the smartphone market has continued to decline in the face of fierce competition from the likes of the Apple iPhone and Google Android.

An early October launch date for Windows Phone Marketplace suggests that the first Windows Phone 7 devices won't be too far behind. In June, tech blog Engadget quoted Mich Mathews, senior vice president for Microsoft's Central Marketing Group, as saying that Windows Phone 7 will launch in October. That timing would allow the devices into the ecosystem before the holiday shopping crunch truly begins.

On Aug. 26, an analyst with Deutsche Bank estimated that Windows Phone 7's initial marketing push could cost Microsoft upward of $400 million.

"This is make-or-break for them. They need to do whatever it takes to stay in the game," analyst Jonathan Goldberg told TechCrunch Aug. 26. "They don't have to take share from Android or Apple, so long as they can attract enough consumers switching from feature phones."

Goldberg suggested that HTC, Samsung and LG Electronics remain the primary Windows Phone 7 handset manufacturers.

Microsoft's increased focus on the cloud extended to its Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 1, which the company announced is now generally available. The Service Pack follows the June release of the Exchange SP1 beta, which Microsoft claims was downloaded by more than 500,000 Technology Adoption Program customers.

Exchange Server 2010 SP1 is available for download here.

Features include Mobile Management Policies, which allow IT administrators to control about 45 policies for remote devices connected to their network, and an expansion of Outlook Web Access premium support to Apple Safari. For end users, the platform includes Conversation View, which automatically groups message threads, and voice mail preview.

Even with the focus on the cloud and mobile, Microsoft remains bound to its older, desktop OS-centric business model. Although the company promotes Windows 7 as an essential element of the future office, a research note this week from Gartner suggested that upgrading from Windows XP and Windows 2000 could pressure companies' IT budgets.

"Corporate IT departments typically prefer to migrate PC operating systems via hardware attrition, which means bringing in the new OS as they replace hardware through a normal refresh cycle," Charles Smulders, managing vice president at Gartner, wrote in an Aug. 26 statement. "Microsoft will support Windows XP for four more years. With most migrations not starting until the fourth quarter of 2010 at the earliest, and with PC hardware replacement cycles running at four to five years, most organizations will not be able to migrate to Windows 7 through usual planned hardware refresh before support for Windows XP ends."

Gartner has previously suggested that a general lack of XP support from ISVs will start around the end of 2011, with a support "XP danger zone" developing at the end of 2012.

Those timelines could push organizations to accelerate their Windows 7 migration, the research firm wrote in this newest note, but that could come with extra labor and capital costs.

Microsoft has sold more than 175 million Windows 7 licenses since the operating system's October 2009 launch. Many of its visual elements and features look positively space age next to Windows 95.

5 Steps To Securing Your Windows XP Home Computer

Most people are aware that there are continuous security issues with Microsoft’s Windows operating system and other programs. However, what most people do not realize is how easy it is to significantly improve your computer’s security and reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim to ever increasingly sophisticated threats that lurk on the internet. These steps should take less than a couple of hours to complete and should not clean out your wallet.

1) Windows Update – the first crucial step you need to take to make sure that all your Microsoft applications have all the latest product updates installed. These updates or “patches” address security vulnerabilities and other issues. Microsoft usually issues these updates on a monthly cycle. Visit the Microsoft website or switch on automatic updates from the Windows Control panel. Even if your “new” computer is second hand this is still a critical first step. If you buy a used computer with Windows XP make sure Service Pack 2 or SP2 is installed.

2) Strong Passwords - people often overlook this but having well thought through passwords is an important element of your computer security. A strong password should include at least 8 characters with a mixture of text, symbols and numbers. As a minimum you need to make sure the services most at risk have a strong log-in password. These services include your bank, credit card, other financial services like PayPal, your email address and any other services like Ebay which hackers can use to generate profit.

3) Anti Virus Protection – while it is fair to say the threat of the computer virus has receded during the last couple of years they can still inflict serious damage on your computer. Part of the reason why the threat has reduced is because PC manufactures are now more frequently bundling anti virus packages with their new computers. For example last year my new Dell shipped with a 90-day trial of McAfee's Internet Security Suite. The best bet here is to purchase a security package which includes firewall and anti virus software as a minimum. Top brands include McAfee and Symantec Norton products. However, Microsoft has recently entered the market with their "OneCare" offering which is very aggressively priced.

4) Firewall - if you are using a broadband connection then a firewall is definite requirement to manage the traffic flowing between your computer and the internet. A firewall monitors the inbound internet traffic passing through the ports of your computer. Better products also monitor outbound traffic from your computer to the internet. As per above the best bet here is buy a firewall application as part of a security package which most vendors offer as standard. If a hardware firewall is included as part of your router package then you do not need anything else. A company called Zone Labs offer a great free firewall product called Zone Alarm which should be used as a minimum. Windows XP does now ship with a free firewall but the product does not monitor outbound communication and therefore I believe does not offer adequate protection.

5) Anti Spyware Tool - this software is the last piece in your basic internet security set up. This tool helps combat spyware and adware. There is a good mixture of free and paid versions on offer. Good free software include Microsoft's Windows Defender, Spybot S&D or Ewido Anti-Malware. Ewido Anti-Malware is frequently recommended in computer help forums. Be careful if you decide to purchase a solution. There are a number of rogue vendors out there which aggressively push products which offer you little value. Stick to trusted names like Webroot's Spy Sweeper or PC Tool's Spyware Doctor. These products always come out well on independent tests.

Windows 7 CD Key

Most of the people, who install or update their Windows operating systems through downloads often forget to write down the serial key. Or, even if they do remember to write it down they can almost bet that they will misplace it.

Hence, to save you from all the heartache of not keeping that essential product key in the event of a system crash, let’s recover Windows 7 CD key right now and save it to an external storage drive such as, hard drive or at least a USB flash drive. Here’s the simplest way to do it:

STEP 1. Go to WinKeyFinder.com and download the Simple Keyfinder tool. It is a small piece of program of about 38K zip file. It is compatible with Windows 2000, 2003, XP, Vista and ofcourse with the latest Windows 7.

STEP 2. Extract all files. To do this double-click the zip file you have just downloaded and choose extract all files option at the top of the menu.

STEP 3. In the next menu that appears, find a place for Simple Keyfinder to extract files, and then click extract at the bottom right of the window. Make sure that the box is checked next to Show extracted files when complete.

STEP 4 You will see a new window listing the contents of the unzipped file. Double-click SimpleKey_Finder. If you see a warning screen, click on Run.

STEP 5. This will open command prompt telling you Windows 7 CD key.

STEP 6. Just make a note of it. This tool automatically creates a text file containing the product key in the same folder where you extracted it. By default, the file is named WinKeyFinder_found_Key.

STEP 7 You can save this file to an external hard drive or USB drive so you can use it later.

System crashes are very common, but now there is no need to worry about that you can restore operating systems.

All about Windows 7 PC Support

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 160px; height: 131px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_s4xFPqCbM5E/S5ofZhLkfoI/AAAAAAAAAi8/0csYgZ-B1PI/s200/windows7-control.aspx.jpeg" border="0" alt="windows 7 control"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5447701222522125954" />
Windows 7 is the latest version of operating system designed by Microsoft. It has some special features, such as advanced in touch and handwriting recognition, support for virtual hard disks, improved performance on multi-core processors, improved boot performance, direct Access and kernel improvements. During the installation of Windows 7 I got stuck in between the installation process. I tried to resolve it on my own but I find myself incapable of it. As I was very much irritated, one of my friends suggested me to go for technical support firms, which provide dedicated technical assistance for issues related to Windows 7.

While searching through the internet, I came across several technical support organizations, which offer a wide range of services for the issues related to Windows 7. Their technical experts not only helped me to install Windows 7 as well as solved issues related to compatibility. Apart from this, they provide comprehensive PC Support for several problems, such as Windows 7 freeze, hardware compatibility issue, product activation, migration to Windows 7 and software compatibility issues. In addition to that it has been equipped with innovative technologies like multi-core support, handwriting recognition, virtualization and Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6), so that you can experience the next-generation computing features.
Hence, demands of installation/upgrade to latest Windows 7 is on the rise. However, it is always important to prepare yourself before rushing for the upgrade. You should check whether your computer’s configuration will support Windows 7.
If your present operating system is Windows Vista, then you don’t need to think much. Simply go online or purchase CD/DVD of Windows 7 installation.
However, if you have a computer with earlier versions like Windows XP, Windows 2000 etc, then you need to be careful
Firstly, check the compatibility of hardware components in your computer with respect to that of Windows 7. You can easily check it with the help of Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor, which is available for free download in Microsoft’s website. It scans and prompts the report. If your computer is lacking somewhere, it suggests the upgrade requirement.
Following are the minimum hardware configuration to install Windows 7:
• Processor-1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
• Memory-1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
• Hard disk-16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
• Graphic card-DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

Take the backup of previous files and settings of your computer. You can make use of external hard disk or USB flash drive to take the back up. If you are not an computer expert, then don’t worry. Microsoft presents Windows 7 Easy Transfer that can be downloaded from its website. This program can take back up of your entire computer’s storage, in few minutes in an easy way.
Now, start the process of Windows 7 installation. Drop the CD/DVD on the tray of your DVD drive and restart your computer. You will be prompted to “Press any key to boot from CD/DVD.” However, if you don’t get this option, go into the BIOS and change the boot order from hard drive to DVD drive. After the file is loaded, installation wizard appears. Mention your language preferences, and then click “Install Now.” You have to accept the license agreement and select to do a custom install. Every effort has been done to enhance it in each possible way.
Microsoft assures Device stage to be a big part of Windows 7. It will change the way you interact with compatible devices and hardware attached to your system.

The improved taskbar is one of the major visible results. Icons have replaced text descriptions buttons. And, you can finally rearrange these icons. The icons will not be jumbled up when you start the computer, next time. The system tray of taskbar has also been improved. The user is the owner of the tray and he can maintain it the way he wants. By default, icons are invisible and they are displayed only when explicitly enabled. The navigation has now become superb. Switching between windows is now done in two levels; hovering over an icon shows a set of window thumbnails running under that application whereas hovering over the thumbnail gives you its full screen preview. Clicking the thumbnail switches windows.

A new UI device that has been introduced by Microsoft in this new version is called Jump Lists. It appears on right clicking the icon. It is a way to get quick access to application features. Applications automatically acquire a Jump List containing their most recently used files. On one hand, Jump Lists provides you with a shortcut to files, on the other hand they sometimes also provide quick access to useful commands. For instance, you can compose an email directly from there without having to open the actual application; similarly music keys help you to control volume, change track, etc without having to open Window Media Player.

Snap feature has been introduced to manage two windows simultaneously. Dragging a window to the left or right edge of the screen resizes the window so that it takes 50% of the screen; hence two windows can be simultaneously opened. With the help of this tool, comparison can be made easily. Organizing windows have become quicker and easier. Dragging a window to the top of the screen maximizes it automatically and dragging it off the top of the screen restores it. With aero peek and aero shake features, a neat desktop can be maintained.
The changes in UI have really impressed users. Windows 7 is the most secure version of operating system from software giant Microsoft. While transiting from Windows XP to Vista, Microsoft has introduced various new security features. However, in latest Windows 7, Microsoft has further enhanced those security features and introduced various new features as well. The company is also open for user’s feedback to make the security features better and user-friendly.
Here are few features that enhance Microsoft Windows 7 security:

Core System Security: The Security Development Lifecycle (SDL) in Windows 7 offers a strong protection against malicious software and virus attacks. SDL features Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR), Data Execution Prevention (DEP), Kernel Patch Protection, and Mandatory Integrity Levels. ASLR makes it difficult to access the core functions present in the memory. Also DEP saves storage area specifically meant to hold data.

BitLocker Drive Encryption: The BitLocker feature in Windows 7 can not only encrypt the data present in primary system volume but it can also encrypt the data present in USB thumb drives. Today when USB drives are capable of holding various GB of data, the BitLocker Drive Encryption feature has increased the security feature of the operating system.

Security feature in Internet Explorer 8: The new Internet Explorer 8 has a protection tool called SmartScreen which offers anti-phishing and anti-malware URL filtering like Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. Also, IE8 highlight the actual URL in bold in the address bar.

UAC (User Account Control) – UAC, was first introduced in Vista. It allows firms to deploy the OS without giving administrative right to users. UAC is made more flexible in Windows 7. User can customize the UAC to choose from four different level of protection ranging from “ Always Notify to Never Notify”

Windows 7 surprising features

The expectations of users have increased with the release of Microsoft's new operating system. And when it actually launched, we realized Windows 7 is worth whereas Windows Vista was bloated and resource-hungry. After Vista, the world started expecting something better from Microsoft. Microsoft has officially released Windows 7. Windows 7 include many enhanced features such as much less boot up and shut down time. You can install Windows 7 in a machine that had Vista or XP. The old settings can be transferred in Windows 7. For someone used to Vista, Windows 7 looks like an upgrade with a few, but significant, bells and whistles. The Start menu has a similar look. The default theme looks like the Vista’s Aero. When you click on the Windows icon on the left, it pops up the Start window, which is again similar to that of Vista’s.

Taskbar

Windows 7 evolutionary taskbar is started with Windows 1.0. With regard to user experience it offers significant improvement in architectural design. To access the functionality of the new Windows 7 taskbar, the taskbar button provides the key. The most important thing is that it displays the icons which are not currently running. Windows 7 has made it easier for the user to get to the programs and destinations with less clicks and mouse movement. Sometimes we need to keep a lot of programs on the Quick launch to make top level room for the pinned items. And to make space for the other programs we require deleting the other valuable programs. While researching the user follows three basic steps which he need to repeat again and again. The user can get to work only after using the program UI. Therefore, for the user comfort Windows 7 provides the feature to jump directly to these features by skipping the unnecessary steps. Directly reaching the destination is now quite easier and accessible from the taskbar.

You get options to open a new tab or browse ‘In Private’ mode, when you right-click on an Internet Explorer icon, . Similarly, right-clicking on a Windows Media Player icon on the taskbar opens a list of frequently played tracks. You also have the option to ‘Resume previous list’ or to ‘Play all music’. Right-clicking on the Windows Explorer icon provide you with the option to open frequently opened programs. If you frequently work on Word, it is enough for you to right-click on the Windows Explorer icon and choose Word from the list of the commonly used programs.

You can also drag around the icons in the task bar according to your preference. Right-clicking on an empty part in the taskbar opens up the usual menu.

Gadgets

If you think that gadgets are occupying lot of space then Windows 7 has come up with a solution. It’s called Gadgets. You can select the gadgets you want from the Desktop Gadget Gallery. The default gadgets available include calendar, clock, CPU meter, currency conversion, feed headlines, slideshow, stocks, weather, Windows media, picture puzzle, etc. It also display the option to get more gadgets online.

Erasing partitions in Windows 7 installation

As the new Windows 7 is achieving a general availability worldwide, you will definitely have the wish to uninstall the Release candidate installation. Such that you can enjoy the latest feature of the final release of the Windows 7 operating system. There are various editions available for this operating system like the Starter edition, Home Basic edition, Home Premium edition, Professional edition, and Ultimate edition. Also, most of you would be interested in running these pre-release versions in a dual boot configuration.

There are basically two separate, but yet, fundamentally identical approaches which are adopted in creating a new partition with Windows XP or Vista.

It should be clearly made understood that you could follow the steps, which are as explained below for removing the older Windows XP or Vista installations, while in a dual boot configuration and also favoring the Windows 7 Final.

Before beginning with the process, one thing you should keep in your mind is that all the collected documents, pictures, songs, videos and others on the Windows partition you are deleting will be lost. If you have not taken a backup yet, then you perform this step before proceeding.

Now let us find the way of removing Windows 7 using Windows Vista: Currently if you are running Windows Vista, then you make use of its built in tools for modifying your hard drive partitions. You can do so by making use of a third party utility. To repair potential boot loader complications you need to be sure to have your Vista DVD handy.

begin with booting up Windows Vista, followed by clicking the Start menu and entering diskmgmt.msc into the search bar. A Disk Management window will open showing all the basic information about the drives attached to your computer.

Then you need to right click the partition, which was previously created for the new Windows 7 and then you have to select to Delete Volume. Now you will be able to see unallocated space on your hard drive where Windows 7 had resided earlier.

Now you have to right click on the original and the only remaining partition, and then selecting Extend Volume, followed by entering the total capacity of the unallocated space.

Repair Windows Vista boot loader: At this point you may or may not be able to boot into Vista as you've just potentially botched your boot loader.

You can split your Windows Vista DVD, and can opt to boot from it and after the initial loading process is completed, there will be three options available like: Install now, What to know before installing Windows and Repair your computer. You can opt for the third option, which is to repair your computer.

After this it will ask you to choose a recovery tool. Now you have to choose the startup recovery option. Within a very short duration the issue will be resolved. At this point you need to reboot and remove the Windows Vista DVD used.

Something You Must know about Your Windows 7 Computer

Sometimes it happens that you need to find out details about your computer system such as CPU clock speed, How much memory, Version of Operating system and etc. You can find out these details from Control Panel in Windows 7. The System windows of Control Panel displays information about your computer hardware and operating system on a Windows 7 computer, in the given categories:

System This section provides the computer’s Windows Experience Index base score (a number from 1.0 to 7.9), the processor type (such as Intel Pentium 4) and speed (such as 2.80 GHz), the amount of onboard random access memory (RAM) that is available, and the system type (32-bit or 64-bit). AT&T is emphasizing the Samsung Go and Acer Aspire One netbooks. Both will be present in stores and online very soon.

The netbooks will come pre-installed with latest Windows 7 and will be the first Windows 7 machines to have integral access to AT&T’s 3G service and its Wi-Fi network, which the firm says has more than 20,000 hot spots nationwide. Both netbooks have 10-inch screens and weigh less than 3 pounds, and will run Windows 7 Starter version.

The price is the same for both netbooks: $199 after a mail-in discount through an AT&T promotion card. The $199 pricing needs the buy of a new two-year AT&T DataConnect plan, which comprises of a 200MB option for $35 per month or a 5GB plan for $60 per month. The netbooks also come with AT&T Communication Manager (ACM) 7.0 preloaded. ACM is a feature that helps users organize their usage and connections. It automatically links users to AT&T Hot Spots when available and the program is activated. The recently revamped ACM is constructed to be compatible with Windows 7.

AT&T and Verizon are recently the only telecom providers in the U.S. that are bundling netbooks with data plans. Both companies began selling netbooks at a discount this year as a way to combat the slowdown of smartphone sales during a recession. Microsoft says that the AT&T netbooks are just the beginning, and more telecom providers will soon be offering subsidized plans for Windows 7 netbooks. In a post on the Windows 7 blog, the company forecasts that more than 50 telecom providers worldwide will deploy Windows 7 netbooks by 2010.

In another development, the T2250MTS is a 22in Full HD widescreen monitor and it’s the first touchscreen display that was seen for Windows 7. It costs £242 and it has seen all-in-one PCs with touchscreens, Iiyama’s new model permits you to upgrade your current PC with touch capabilities.

Rather than being a resistive screen, which analyzes pressure, the T2250MTS has infrared transmitters and receivers around its perimeter. This means the screen is recessed by around 5mm from the front bezel, although this is barely detectable. A stylus slots into the bottom edge of the monitor, but this is designed only for fiddly operation. For most of the time, though, you’ll want to use your fingertips, just as you would on an iPhone or iPod Touch.

As you’d expect, the T2250MTS supports multitouch gestures. You can use two fingers at once to zoom in and out of web pages and photos, rotate images and even paint lines in programs like Microsoft’s Paint. However, it’s important to note that not all programs support touch control, so you’ll find that you can’t use motions in Photoshop Elements 8, for example. In programs like this, all you can do it use one finger to check the mouse cursor, both to point and click. Oscillating your fingertip just above the screen is enough to pick up the cursor and drag it, but you can tap the screen to select, and double-tap to double-click. During our testing it was found the touchscreen was accurate, although it was needed to resort to the style to tap small icons such as the buttons to minimise and maximise windows.

How to Burn a Music CD Using Windows Media Player 9

1. With Windows 7, you can create your own CDs with your favorite tracks. Nowadays, you burn a CD, which means that you copy files to the CD. To create a list of tracks to burn, click the Burn tab in Media Player to display the pane on the right side of Media Player.

2. Now insert a blank recordable CD into the CD drive. You can buy blank CDs at an office supply or electronics store. CD-Rs are good for music.

3. To show the tracks that you want to copy to a CD, click a playlist or music category.

4. Now, drag and drop a track, an album or a playlist into the burn list. To rearrange the tracks, drag them up and down in the burn list.

5. To delete a track from the burn list, right-click and select Remove from List. To start over from scratch, click Clear List.

6. The number of minutes in the selected tracks is shown in the burn list which is next to Disc 1. A CD can hold about 75 minutes of audio. A bar graph and numbers shows how many minutes are free of the total available memory.

If you select more audio files that will fit on one CD, Windows 7 Media Player automatically starts a list for a second disc below the first. You need to remove one or more tracks from the list if you want to burn only one disc.

7. Now click the Start Burn button on the Command Bar when you’re ready to create a CD.

8. The burn progress bar is shown at the top of the Burn list. Let the burn complete before you go on to other tasks. If the disc doesn’t automatically come out you need to push the button on the tray or right-click over the CD title and click Eject. Now close the Burn pane by clicking the Burn tab.

The disc will be unusable if you don’t let the burn complete but you can click the Cancel Burn button to stop mid-burn.

View Pictures in Media Player

Media Player displays more types of media than just music. To view pictures in Windows 7 Media Player, You need to click Pictures in the Navigation pane on the left.

Using Media Player, you can

Make new playlists of pictures with or without music.

Listen to music and look at pictures at the same time.

Copy or burn pictures to CD.

Sync pictures to a media player or an digital MP3 player that also has a screen for pictures, such as a Microsoft Zune.

Why Prefer Windows 7 Over Vista

Many of my relatives and friends completely denied to make the switch to Windows Vista when it was released. Some who purchased new machines with Vista installed immediately downgraded the OS. A few said that they would give up XP only when you pried it from their cold, dead hands. But even in the last category, many of them are impressed with what they’ve seen in the Windows 7.

Reasons why to choose windows 7 over windows vista

While some tech professionals are saying Windows 7 isn’t really all that different from Vista and indeed, one of the plus point for Vista users is that Windows 7 can generally use the same drivers and run the same applications as Vista.

Microsoft redesigned the UAC in Windows 7. Most of the people feel this on-going effort has been successful.

Microsoft has reduced the actions that prompt you making it less annoying for the users. The software giant has made several changes, but the biggest change is the User Account Control “slider” setting which results in less annoyance and more security.

User Account Control safeguards your computer against hackers and protects it against malicious software. The tool prompts the user for the permission, if any application wants to make any changes to your computer. UAC is more flexible in Windows 7 than in Windows Vista. Now, every task doesn’t require your consent in Windows 7, and if you have administrator privileges, you can easily fine tune to UAC’s notification settings from the control panel.

Vista made the left navigation pane in Windows Explorer a constantly moving target. As you navigate your mouse, it will automatically scroll back and forth.

You can avoid the auto-scrolling by dragging the pane to make it wide enough to accommodate the entire tree.In Windows 7, the navigation pane stays still, so you no longer risk getting seasick from all the swaying back and forth.

In Windows XP, you could use pretty much whatever graphics cards you wanted for multiple monitors. According to reports, that to use multiple graphics cards, you would have to all use the same driver. That meant I couldn’t use cards from different vendors together. I had to shell out a few bucks to get more ATI cards before I could use all my monitors again.

According to reports, Windows 7 has added support for multiple heterogeneous graphics cards from different vendors. Now this probably doesn’t mean you can combine ATI and NVIDIA cards in an SLI-configuration, but it sounds as if we can have our multi-vendor multi-monitor setups back.

Another common issue about Vista has been the inordinate amount of time it can take to boot up. This might not be a problem for those who leave their systems on all the time, but if you shut down your system every night, waiting around forever for it to get started in the morning can turn into a major annoyance.

A Microsoft official indicated that the company’s goal for Windows 7 is a 15-second boot time, whereas three quarters of Vista users report boot times of more than 30 seconds.

Windows 7 Guide- Changes To Security in Windows 7

Microsoft launched Windows 7 with few enhancements such as HomeGroup, Aero, etc. However, there are several of new and enhanced security features as well. Here’s a rundown of key changes you must know about.

Everyone’s talking about the interface changes, the new taskbar, omission of the sidebar, a new look for Windows Explorer. Under the hood, there are few more changes, including latest and enhanced security features. Let’s look at some security features that have been changed or added in Windows 7.
Action Center- In Vista, security configurations can be access from the Security Center in Control Panel. In Windows 7, you won’t find a Security Center. That’s because it’s been replaced by a new Action Center. The Action Center offers security configurations as well as options for other administrative tasks, such as Backup, Troubleshooting And Diagnostics, and Windows Update.

Windows 7 UAC- User Account Control (UAC) was introduced with Vista, made to provide better protection from malware. It makes all user accounts run as standard users, even administrator accounts. If you need to perform something that requires administrative rights, it asks for permission. And asks. And asks. This in-your-face aspect of UAC has caused numerous complaints and has led some users to turn it off completely, thus exposing themselves to threats.
In Windows 7, UAC is still there, but now you can set up how vocal it will be. There are four settings you configure from the Windows 7 UAC settings in the Action Center. You can set UAC to:
• Always notify you when you install software or make any changes to Windows settings (as Vista does now).

• Notify you when programs make changes but not if you make changes to Windows settings (default Setting).

• Notify you only when programs make changes but turn off Secure Desktop, which dims the desktop while the UAC prompt is displayed. ( Preferred setting.)

• Never notify you. ( Not recommended.)
BitLocker- Windows 7 comes through and allows you to encrypt removable storage drives. And it’s easy to do. Just open the BitLocker applet in Control Panel, choose the drive you want to encrypt, and click Turn On BitLocker.

Windows Filtering Platform- Windows Filtering Platform (WFP) is a set of APIs introduced in Vista. In Windows 7, developers can use it to iinclude some parts of the Windows Firewall into their own programs. This will allow a third-party program to turn off certain parts of the Windows Firewall selectively if need be.

DNSSec- Windows 7 supports for DNSSec (Domain Name System Security), which is a group of extensions to the DNS platform that improved security. With DNSSec, a DNS zone can take advantage of digital signature technology so that you can validate the authenticity of data that’s received.

Tweak Windows 7 for Netbook

According to a report over 14.9 million netbooks were sold and this number is expected to double or triple after one year. When you want a very compact and low cost way to do basic computing then netbook is the right choice for you.

A test showed that Windows 7 netbook performed just OK. If you want to speed up your windows 7 netbook then the key is to turn off unnecessary features. Because it is a netbook and there so many Windows features that will never be used. Disabling the unnecessary features will also increase your battery life as only few processes will use the CPU running in the background.

Tweak options in Windows 7 Netbook to increase speed

1. Fine Tune Animation Settings/Visual Graphics
Eye candy in Windows 7 is the main cause of GUI slowness. If your netbook has a good graphics card that can display Aero Glass it can be choppy at times.

You need to click on the 'Start' Button and then type in 'Adjust the Appearance' and hit 'Enter'. This will enable the Visual Effects performance options.

It is suggested that you disable the following settings by removing the check on the screen:
Animate controls and elements inside windows
Animate windows when minimizing and maximizing
Fade or slide menus into view
Show window contents while dragging
Slide open combo boxes
Fade or slide ToolTips into view
Fade out menu items after clicking

When you are finished, click 'OK'.

2. Remove Startup Programs from windows 7
The startup programs that you don't need waste the resources more that any other programs. To remove startup programs, you need to click on the 'Start' Button, click 'Run', type 'msconfig' in and hit Enter.

Now click on the Startup tab as the System Configuration utility loads. Next remove the check next to any applications you don’t need and then click 'OK'.

3. Disable windows 7 Services
Also stop the Windows 7 services running in the background of your computer.
Firstly, click on the 'Start' Button which is with Windows logo and click 'Run', type 'services.msc ' in it and press 'Enter' on your keyboard .

Now as the Services management console appears, you can disable and stop the services by selecting the service, right clicking and selecting Properties. Now change the Startup type to 'Disabled' and then click the Stop button. To return to the Services management console, click 'OK'.

4. Turn off Windows 7 features
Windows also allows you to turn off Windows components that you were not able to disable in earlier versions of Windows. For example the Gadget platform, Internet Explorer, Windows Search and media features. Follow these steps:
1. Click 'Start'>'Control Panel' and choose 'Programs And Features'.
2. Now click Turn Windows Features On Or Off in the left pane.
3. Now to enable or disable the various Windows features, simply choose or deselect the check boxes then click 'OK'.

5. Turn off windows 7 Aero Snap (optional)
A new Windows 7 feature Aero Snap causes your application windows to automatically snap into a preconfigured state when you move them to the edges of the screen. If you will drag a window to the far right the it will resize automatically to fill exactly half the screen. Now if you drag it to the top corner then it will maximize to fill the full screen. This can be useful, but if you prefer that your windows stay the size you made them the it can also be annoying. Follow these steps:

1. Click 'Start' and then click 'Control Panel'.
2. Now click 'Ease of Access Center' and then click 'Make the Mouse Easier to Use'.
3. Choose the 'Prevent Windows From Being Automatically Arranged When Moved To The Edge Of The Screen' check box and then click OK.

NEW WINDOWS 7 FEATURES- HIGHLIGHTED

Windows 7 operating system carries a large number of features along with the well designed interface, which brings a look very similar to Windows Vista but with many changes.

The changes have been in the Graphical user interface like the new boot screen, redesigned taskbar, explorer, login screen, and many others. The purpose of UAC is to enable you to log on and operate the computer with a more secure standard user account. When you want to perform an operation that could arise a security risk on your Windows 7 computer, UAC requires that you enter an administrator account password before it proceeds. This system offers a greatly increased level of security, especially to computers that are not protected as part of a network domain.

In Windows 7 when UAC is enable, as it is by default, clicking a command that requires administrator approval at that UAC security level opens the User Account Control message box. When you’re logged on as an administrator, Windows requests only that you acknowledge the security prompt; you don’t need to enter your password.

To continue with the restricted operation: If you’re logged on as a standard user, click one of the administrator accounts, enter password, and then click Yes. If you’re logged on as an administrator, click on Yes.

User Account Control message box appears only when a application tries to make changes to your Windows 7 computer, and not when you make changes to Windows settings, as you will be doing when working through the exercises. If User Account Control is set to Always Notify and a User Account Control message box appears, you will need to provide the requested credentials or acknowledgment.

How to install Microsoft Windows 7 using a USB 2.0 Flash Drive

Get a much faster Windows 7 installation with USB 2.0 Flash Drive.

The conventional way of installing an operating system, in this case the Windows 7, has been through a DVD installation. However, if you look at things from another angle, it is much slower to install an OS with a DVD.

The only thing you need in hand to enable this installation is to have a high-speed USB 2.0 flash drive with a recommended minimum storage space of 4GB. They are easily available and also come for a cheap price.

Windows 7 installation:
Now to start initiating some settings for the installation, one will have to be ready with the USB thumbdrive in order to cling on to Windows OS installation files. Once this is done, move on to the next by clicking on the Start Tab and typing “cmd” (command) in the Run field box.

Install winodws 7 from iso
A window should open with a command prompt and at this point, type “diskpart”. Automatically, a new disk part will crop up. From here the process gets a little complicated as a lot of commands and prompts have to be typed and entered. The confusing part is with the terminologies and one has to be really careful while typing them, as a wrong command will bring everything to a halt and one will have to start all over again.

installing winodws 7 from usb
On the new disk, type “list disk”. This will show all the disk drives located in your computer. Now the next part will be to find the number of the USB drive used to initiate this installation. Type “select disk (with the USB number)”, when this selection has been completed, type the following three commands in order - Clean, Create partition primary and select primary partition. All these have to be activated now by clicking on “active”.

After this, “formatfs=fat32quick” and type assign. This will bring an end to all the complications on types and commands. At this stage it is important to remember again that the commands should be typed with accuracy and precision with no margin for error at all.

Finally, it is time now to nail the installation process. This can be done by copying the Windows installation files from the ISO format file to the USB drive. To open the file, you will need a WinRAR file and copy all installation files to the USB thumb drive. Plug the USB device into the USB port of the computer wherein the operating system will be installed into. After this, one will have to configure the computer BIOS in order to boot it from the USB thumb drive.

Configure the computers BIOS to boot from your USB thumb drive. This completes your installation of Windows 7 using a USB 2.0 Flash Drive.

Display Your Drives in Windows 7

Its a new feature of Windows 7 that doesn’t display empty drives such as memory card and USB flash drives. Actually it provides an indexed view of multiple data sources. Here, it gives you the system to segregate your personal and public data. For every Documents, Downloads, Photos, Videos and music, you will have Personal and Public folder.Because of the new library functionality, many of the common user folders in Windows 7 have been renamed.

In Windows Vista you had Documents, Downloads, Photos, Videos, and Music. In Windows 7, these folders have been renamed and now you have Personal Documents, Personal Downloads, Personal Photos, Personal Videos, and Personal Music.Besides these personal document folders, each Windows 7 computer is going to have public folder such as Public Documents. The purpose of Libraries is to join together these personal and public documents into a single documents directory (as well as any other libraries that you create). Thus, the default Libraries in Windows 7 are:

1. Documents: made up of Personal Documents and Public Documents
2. Downloads: made up of Personal Downloads and Public Downloads
3. Music: made up of Personal Music and Public Music
4. Photos: made up of Personal Photos and Public Photos
5. Videos: made up of Personal Videos and Public Videos
If interested you can create your own libraries as:

Step 1. Navigate to the window explorer, to reach the libraries.
Step 2. Right click on the libraries to open the different option, here navigate to new and then to New Library.
Step 3. The New Library will be added to the Window explorer in the right hand side under the Library option.
Step 4. Once you create it, you need to decide what you want included in the library. To do this, right-click on the folder and click Properties. On the Library Tab, click Add, select a folder, then, click Include in Library. Now you can add any folder of your choice to the New Library.

Now no need to call any Network Engineer. Here are the steps:
Step 1. Click on the Fix a Network Problem, in the Network and Sharing windows.
Step 2. It will gives you link for: Internet Connections, Connections to a Shared Folder, Home Group, Network Adapter and Incoming Connections to This computer. Under hardware device also it will give you option to trouble shoot it connectivity with the Network.
Step 3. Now your issue is at your one click access, choose from the above link where you want to troubleshoot.
With the launch of Windows 7 defragmentation is better than the previous Windows versions. Windows 7 offers better defragmentation than Vista and it also enables you to configure the disk defragmentation from command line. Performing disk defragmentation also ensures that the disk is running at the optimum performance.Perform the following steps to run Disk Defragmentation from command line.

1. Run the cmd command to open the command prompt window.
2. Run the defragcommand line utility to launch disk defragmentation.
Following parameters can be used along with the defrag command.
* /r: this parameter can be used to defrag multiple drives simultaneously.
* -a: this parameter is used to perform a defrag analysis.
* -v: this parameter is used to print the reports.
* -r: this parameter treats files with at least 64 Mb of fragments like are not fragmented.
* -w: this parameter is used to defrag everything.
Unlike Windows Vista, Windows 7 does not seem to feature a sidebar. However, the sidebar still exists in Windows 7 and runs in the background. The sidebar automatically launches at startup. Perform the following steps, if you want to get rid of the sidebar:
1. Run the msconfig.exe command-line utility to start the Microsoft Configuration utility.
2. Click the Startup tab and deselect the Sidebar box.

The task can also be achieved by performing the following steps:
1. Recently I found another problem: sharing folders with a guest Windows 7!

Problem:
So no, what is working? Well, you set the folder (s) in the "Shared Folders" dialog box of the virtual machine settings and will not appear in Windows 7, it works with Windows XP.

The solution:
As many of you out there, I searched and searched online for a solution to this issue, I have also observed to be very popular (why should it be? To create something in the virtual machine and want to save, right?) , and many guides are incomplete or pointing in the wrong direction. So today I present a step-by-step (with screenshots) of this easily fixed issue (you will not believe how easy it was at the end).

For this tutorial, we used VirtualBox 3.0.6 and New Windows 7 Ultimate in Ubuntu 9.10 machine Alpha 6. The steps below assume you have NO shared folders added to your Windows virtual machine 7. If you configured the folders, just follow the three steps!

1. Open VirtualBox, and with 7 virtual machine window, select on the left side, click the button 'General' tab "Details".
2. In the configuration window that appears, click on "Shared Folders" entry (top) and then click the folder icon with a little + (right) to add a new shared folder.
3. A new dialog appears, called Add Share. Click the arrow in the "Folder Path" and select "Other". Find the folder you want to share with the virtual machine of Windows 7 and click OK.
4. You will now see the full path to the folder you want to share; you can give a name or just leave it alone. Click OK to close the "Add Share" dialog.
5. You will now see the folder in the "Shared Folders" section. Click OK to close the settings dialog.
6. Now, start the Windows 7 virtual machine. When the system is fully loaded, open My Computer and click on the "Map network drive" button.
7. In the new window that appears, select a letter in the field of "Drive" (any letter you want from the list), and ... Here is the big secret ... type \ \ vboxsrv \ followed by the name of the shared folder in the folder "field"!

Also, do not forget to check the "Connect with different credentials" option.
After this, click the "Finish" button and you will be prompted to insert the username and password of your Linux machine. Check the "Remember my credentials" option and click the OK button.

How to change User Account Control settings in Windows 7

The User Account Control (UAC) tool was one of the most reviled features of Vista - and appearing annoyed every time you wanted to install or update a program - and many users are surprised to discover that retains its place in Windows 7 . But with a higher level of control, this new version is much less intrusive. Here's how to change the UAC settings and explain what each one.

How to change the UAC settings
1. To view and change the UAC settings, first click the Start button, then open the Control Panel. Now click on the system and the "Security" and in the resulting window (pictured below) you'll see a link "Change settings of User Account Control". Click on it and the UAC window will appear.

2. The selection bar is displayed in the UAC window (below) can be used to select one of four settings. The default is the second highest level of protection, which means that we get a warning if a program tries to change the Windows settings. The warning does not appear when you make changes yourself, though.

3. The fair value below the default value is very similar. In fact, only made a cosmetic change how UAC works, that does not dim the screen when a popup. This means it will be less evident when an alert appears, so I recommend you stick to the default settings.

4. If you are particularly concerned about the criminals and software be deceived without knowing it, in authorizing changes to the configuration of Windows, you can press the UCA to its highest level. In short, this means UAC popups appears less frequently as they do in Vista, alerts you when you make changes Windows 7 settings.

5. Slide the bar to the bottom right and effectively turn the UAC function. With UAC in this configuration, any program can make changes to Windows settings and leave you none the wiser. Unless you are having problems with UAC when running a specific program, we would recommend clear direction of this value.

Windows 7 Error Smart Review

I have been looking for a product to correct my mistakes PC for good. Is this, like Microsoft Vista? Will it be stable? Why did Microsoft get it right this time? ... And the list goes on and on.

I wrote an article a few weeks ago after installing Windows 7 reports that I think is really the "Real Deal". They are still behind those words as the release date approaches. This is the most stable operating system I've used since Windows NT 4.0. I've been so close to zero problems with it since I installed the RTM version the day it was available.

Note that I am not the "normal" user or computer. I am a software engineer and use my computer for a living. They rarely turn off or restart my computer and I am taxed to the limit every day I'm working. I jumped on the train before Windows Vista and there were several issues to format my computer is Windows XP and put it back in it.

Not going back to XP, Vista or any other operating system now. Windows 7 has made a believer out of me and I will stand behind this operating system. The only, and I do mean only one issue I had with installation was a driver problem with my video card. I was able to quickly find the driver I needed, installed it and my sound has been working properly since.

I am also an avid gamer. Windows 7 gets up and offers in this area. It seems that Microsoft has paid little attention to memory management with this operating system too. I am able to run all my games in windowed mode and do not seem to impact performance at all.

I know that questions continue to accumulate in the release date nears, but I firmly believe that this operating system have met all the skeptics out there. I admit I was a little skeptical when I installed it, but has made a believer out of me and I think it'll make you one too.
