A lot has changed for Microsoft in the intervening 15 years, and this week offered some key examples of that fact. The world is more mobile and cloud-based, and the emphasis in 2010 is increasingly on smartphones as opposed to desktop-based operating systems.

The final version of Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 developer tools will arrive Sept. 16—yet another sign the company is ramping ever faster toward the release of its next-generation smartphone platform.

"All developers will have equal opportunity to capitalize on the first-mover advantage of having their apps or games ready at launch," Brandon Watson, Microsoft's director of developer experience for Windows Phone 7, wrote in a posting on The Windows Blog. Microsoft has been encouraging both games and application designers to build for the new platform, in hopes of having a sizable app ecosystem.

That update, combined with news that Microsoft will launch its Windows Phone Marketplace in early October, also helps diagram the theme of the company's next three quarters: Just as Autumn 2009 centered on the make-or-break of the Windows 7 launch, this year represents the company's gamble on smartphones.

It's a gamble that needs to pay off, of course. Although Windows Mobile 6.5 was intended as a market-share placeholder until Microsoft could bring Windows Phone 7 online, the company's portion of the smartphone market has continued to decline in the face of fierce competition from the likes of the Apple iPhone and Google Android.

An early October launch date for Windows Phone Marketplace suggests that the first Windows Phone 7 devices won't be too far behind. In June, tech blog Engadget quoted Mich Mathews, senior vice president for Microsoft's Central Marketing Group, as saying that Windows Phone 7 will launch in October. That timing would allow the devices into the ecosystem before the holiday shopping crunch truly begins.

On Aug. 26, an analyst with Deutsche Bank estimated that Windows Phone 7's initial marketing push could cost Microsoft upward of $400 million.

"This is make-or-break for them. They need to do whatever it takes to stay in the game," analyst Jonathan Goldberg told TechCrunch Aug. 26. "They don't have to take share from Android or Apple, so long as they can attract enough consumers switching from feature phones."

Goldberg suggested that HTC, Samsung and LG Electronics remain the primary Windows Phone 7 handset manufacturers.

Microsoft's increased focus on the cloud extended to its Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 1, which the company announced is now generally available. The Service Pack follows the June release of the Exchange SP1 beta, which Microsoft claims was downloaded by more than 500,000 Technology Adoption Program customers.

Features include Mobile Management Policies, which allow IT administrators to control about 45 policies for remote devices connected to their network, and an expansion of Outlook Web Access premium support to Apple Safari. For end users, the platform includes Conversation View, which automatically groups message threads, and voice mail preview.

Even with the focus on the cloud and mobile, Microsoft remains bound to its older, desktop OS-centric business model. Although the company promotes Windows 7 as an essential element of the future office, a research note this week from Gartner suggested that upgrading from Windows XP and Windows 2000 could pressure companies' IT budgets.

"Corporate IT departments typically prefer to migrate PC operating systems via hardware attrition, which means bringing in the new OS as they replace hardware through a normal refresh cycle," Charles Smulders, managing vice president at Gartner, wrote in an Aug. 26 statement. "Microsoft will support Windows XP for four more years. With most migrations not starting until the fourth quarter of 2010 at the earliest, and with PC hardware replacement cycles running at four to five years, most organizations will not be able to migrate to Windows 7 through usual planned hardware refresh before support for Windows XP ends."

Gartner has previously suggested that a general lack of XP support from ISVs will start around the end of 2011, with a support "XP danger zone" developing at the end of 2012.

Those timelines could push organizations to accelerate their Windows 7 migration, the research firm wrote in this newest note, but that could come with extra labor and capital costs.

Microsoft has sold more than 175 million Windows 7 licenses since the operating system's October 2009 launch. Many of its visual elements and features look positively space age next to Windows 95.

A firewall monitors the inbound internet traffic passing through the ports of your computer. Better products also monitor outbound traffic from your computer to the internet. As per above the best bet here is buy a firewall application as part of a security package which most vendors offer as standard. If a hardware firewall is included as part of your router package then you do not need anything else. AT&T is emphasizing the Samsung Go and Acer Aspire One netbooks. Both will be present in stores and online very soon.

The netbooks will come pre-installed with latest Windows 7 and will be the first Windows 7 machines to have integral access to AT&T’s 3G service and its Wi-Fi network, which the firm says has more than 20,000 hot spots nationwide. Both netbooks have 10-inch screens and weigh less than 3 pounds, and will run Windows 7 Starter version.

The price is the same for both netbooks: $199 after a mail-in discount through an AT&T promotion card. The $199 pricing needs the buy of a new two-year AT&T DataConnect plan, which comprises of a 200MB option for $35 per month or a 5GB plan for $60 per month. The netbooks also come with AT&T Communication Manager (ACM) 7.0 preloaded. ACM is a feature that helps users organize their usage and connections. It automatically links users to AT&T Hot Spots when available and the program is activated. The recently revamped ACM is constructed to be compatible with Windows 7.

AT&T and Verizon are recently the only telecom providers in the U.S. that are bundling netbooks with data plans. Both companies began selling netbooks at a discount this year as a way to combat the slowdown of smartphone sales during a recession. Microsoft says that the AT&T netbooks are just the beginning, and more telecom providers will soon be offering subsidized plans for Windows 7 netbooks. In a post on the Windows 7 blog, the company forecasts that more than 50 telecom providers worldwide will deploy Windows 7 netbooks by 2010.

In programs like this, all you can do it use one finger to check the mouse cursor, both to point and click. Oscillating your fingertip just above the screen is enough to pick up the cursor and drag it, but you can tap the screen to select, and double-tap to double-click. During our testing it was found the touchscreen was accurate, although it was needed to resort to the style to tap small icons such as the buttons to minimise and maximise windows.

User Account Control (UAC) is a security tool first introduced with Windows Vista. The purpose of UAC is to enable you to log on and operate the computer with a more secure standard user account. When you want to perform an operation that could arise a security risk on your Windows 7 computer, UAC requires that you enter an administrator account password before it proceeds. This system offers a greatly increased level of security, especially to computers that are not protected as part of a network domain.

In Windows 7 when UAC is enable, as it is by default, clicking a command that requires administrator approval at that UAC security level opens the User Account Control message box. When you’re logged on as an administrator, Windows requests only that you acknowledge the security prompt; you don’t need to enter your password.

How to Fix Windows 7 Sharing in VirtualBox

In my last tutorial on VirtualBox (virtualization software free from Sun Microsystems) that offered a solution to fix the USB support, a problem which I think is fixed now, but ... Recently I found another problem: sharing folders with a guest Windows 7!

Problem:
So no, what is working? Well, you set the folder (s) in the "Shared Folders" dialog box of the virtual machine settings and will not appear in Windows 7, it works with Windows XP.

The solution:
As many of you out there, I searched and searched online for a solution to this issue, I have also observed to be very popular (why should it be? To create something in the virtual machine and want to save, right?) , and many guides are incomplete or pointing in the wrong direction. So today I present a step-by-step (with screenshots) of this easily fixed issue (you will not believe how easy it was at the end).

For this tutorial, we used VirtualBox 3.0.6 and New Windows 7 Ultimate in Ubuntu 9.10 machine Alpha 6. The steps below assume you have NO shared folders added to your Windows virtual machine 7. If you configured the folders, just follow the three steps!

1. Open VirtualBox, and with 7 virtual machine window, select on the left side, click the button 'General' tab "Details".
2. In the configuration window that appears, click on "Shared Folders" entry (top) and then click the folder icon with a little + (right) to add a new shared folder.
3. A new dialog appears, called Add Share. Click the arrow in the "Folder Path" and select "Other". Find the folder you want to share with the virtual machine of Windows 7 and click OK.
4. You will now see the full path to the folder you want to share; you can give a name or just leave it alone. Click OK to close the "Add Share" dialog.
5. You will now see the folder in the "Shared Folders" section. Click OK to close the settings dialog.
6. Now, start the Windows 7 virtual machine. When the system is fully loaded, open My Computer and click on the "Map network drive" button.
7. In the new window that appears, select a letter in the field of "Drive" (any letter you want from the list), and ... Here is the big secret ... type \ \ vboxsrv \ followed by the name of the shared folder in the folder "field"!

Also, do not forget to check the "Connect with different credentials" option.
After this, click the "Finish" button and you will be prompted to insert the username and password of your Linux machine. Check the "Remember my credentials" option and click the OK button.

How to change User Account Control settings in Windows 7

The User Account Control (UAC) tool was one of the most reviled features of Vista - and appearing annoyed every time you wanted to install or update a program - and many users are surprised to discover that retains its place in Windows 7 . But with a higher level of control, this new version is much less intrusive. Here's how to change the UAC settings and explain what each one.

How to change the UAC settings

1. To view and change the UAC settings, first click the Start button, then open the Control Panel. Now click on the system and the "Security" and in the resulting window (pictured below) you'll see a link "Change settings of User Account Control". Click on it and the UAC window will appear.

2. The selection bar is displayed in the UAC window (below) can be used to select one of four settings. The default is the second highest level of protection, which means that we get a warning if a program tries to change the Windows settings. The warning does not appear when you make changes yourself, though.

3. The fair value below the default value is very similar. In fact, only made a cosmetic change how UAC works, that does not dim the screen when a popup. This means it will be less evident when an alert appears, so I recommend you stick to the default settings.

4.
